Goodbye Green, Hello Radiant Orchid (or just plain purple)! Pantone, the global authority on color, announced that Radiant Orchid, a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple, as the color of the year for 2014! According to Pantone, “an invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasing valued in today’s society.”
The color of the year also applies to fashion, as the color’s rosy undertones radiate on the skin, producing a healthy glow when worn by both men and women. Fashion designers are incorporating Radiant Orchid into their spring collections and on The Red Carpet, and variations of this hue will carry into men’s and women’s clothing and accessories throughout the year.
Purple is already “popping up” in stores. At Chesterfield Mall, I found a purple dress that just arrived at Charlotte Russe. Charming Charlie has, of course, a section of the store dedicated to purple, where I found purses, necklaces, bracelets and even clothing! I also found purple at Francesca’s and H&M, as featured in my segment today on KTVI Channel 2 News at 11 a.m.
You may not want to wear purple head-to-toe (although I know a few people who do enjoy that, and you know who are are). My recommendation is to pair your purple with navy during the fall/winter season, and pair with white during spring/summer. You can also wear purple with black or gray if your closet is already full of one of those neutral colors.
The Pantone color of the year selection requires careful consideration, and to arrive at the selection, they quite literally comb the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations and other influences such as availability of new textures, and even sports events that capture worldwide attention…maybe the upcoming Olympic Games!
So, what are your thoughts on purple being named the color of the year?
