Trend of the Week: Denim Shirts
A fashion mainstay that’s trending now is the denim button-down shirt. A denim shirt adds a dash of edge to an otherwise girly outfit or tones down a formal look. Unlike a denim jacket, which needs to be layered over something to make its fashion statement, jean shirts speak for themselves. When thinking of a denim shirt’s versatility, one word comes to mind: in-jean-ious!
Denim shirts were originally worn by cowboys, farmers, and industrial workers. When a poster symbolizing World War II feminism was rediscovered in the 1980s, a denim-shirt-clad Rosie the Riveter declared, “We can do it!” The jean shirt seamlessly transitioned from the ranch to the runway and became the “it” shirt for many women in the 1990s. 2013’s updated versions can be found in a variety of washes and with unexpected elements, like lace, polka dots, or a knotted waist.
A fun way to wear a denim shirt is to button it up to the top and tuck it into a flirty skirt (perhaps with pleats or a floral print), for a tomboy-chic mix. To emit a rocker vibe, wear a denim shirt with a black leather skirt, shorts, or pants. The surprise combination of fabrics looks fierce! A jean shirt is classic with white pants and more modern with slim-fit or silky printed pants. Finally, while denim-on-denim is considered by many to be a fashion crime, the laws of fashion are always changing. Avoid a ticket by making sure your jeans are in a darker or lighter wash than the denim top and adding non-denim elements like a belt or t-shirt. Or, wear a pair of colored skinny jeans with your denim top for a must-have look for spring!
